We provide many ways for users to get help if the
information isn't in the help system.
- Help Desk - Operators and a computer officer are available in
the Design and Project Office to answer queries. Being close to
where most of the teaching-related computing is done, they are able to
deal quickly with most of the most common queries.
- A range of
e-mail contacts
- comments - general comments and feedback.
- help - general info about computing in the Dept.
- bugs - any bugs in system or application software.
- sysman - major system problems.
- postmaster - problems and queries regarding electronic mail.
- newsmaster - Usenet news queries and configuration
- user-admin - account administration
- ip-register - IP address registrations and adding machines to the network.
- network-support - network problems.
- unix-support - general Unix system queries
- research-support - Research Support
- ml-support - Mill Lane
- pc-support - configuring PC systems in the department
- mac-support - configuring Mac systems in the department
- webadmin - WWW queries.
- operators - computer library, consumables, printer problems, quotas,
backups.
- Direct access to computer officers, describing their areas of
expertise.
- Caroline Blackmun - News, X.500, Electronic mail, perl. Interests: Unix
operating system, system programming, networking and distributed systems.
- Dr Arul Britto - Finite element analysis, Engineering Packages.
- Alastair Cain - Mac and PC systems, Novell Netware, Web
administration.
- Pete Clarkson - Fortran, NAG library, PCs, Macs. University Computing Service representative.
- Patrick Gosling - Research computing systems, primarily within the Speech, Vision and
Robotics group. Particularly unix systems administration.
- Michael Gray - Unix-based research systems, CBT programs. Interests: Unix
operating system, C, Java, real-time systems.
- Tim Love - C, X, LaTeX, pascal, Unix. Interests: Software Engineering, Graphics,
Unix/Mac applications.
- James Matheson - Head of Computer Systems Group. Strategic planning, computing
finance, various admin. Interests: Networking and
