People

The Computer Systems Group, led by Mr James Matheson, maintains the Teaching System, the network infrastructure, and supports many of the administrative and research machines in the Department. System planning and budgetting is the reponsibility of the Computer Systems Committee with input from the Computer Coursework Committee, the Fourth Year Project Committee, the Computer Officers' Committee, the Teaching Office and the Language Unit. Individual staff members and students (especially fourth years) can also request software to be installed. The Computer Officers' Committee meets weekly to review the running of Computing in the Department; the minutes of these meetings are available online to local users. Guided by these meetings and input from the other committees, the Head of the Computer Systems Group produces an annual planning document for the Computer Systems Committee (copies of these are available).

Several members of the Computer Systems Group have responsibilities and experience outside the running of the system, for example teaching and research in the Department and membership of University committees. This wider experience is very valuable in planning and in advising others in the use of the systems. We have the specialisations listed below.

2 computer operators deal with system administration and documentation. They also provide help to users. A team of technicians provide hardware support.
