The Computing Service run a central email redirection service which accepts email addresses of the form university_wide_id@cam.ac.uk and forwards mail sent to that address to that person's chosen mail handling system within the University.
Members of the department are normally registered with the mail redirection service when their account is set up, but this is not done for people who appear to have already have chosen how to handle their @cam.ac.uk mail.
Linked to the email redirection service is a University wide directory of email addresses. You can search this directory at http://jackdaw.cam.ac.uk/mailsearch/ or on the global search page, which also allows you to search for phone numbers or web pages within the University.
Until October 1999, everyone who registered with the email redirection service was automatically included in a University wide email directory. Since October 1999, in anticipation of the need to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 by 24th October 2001, it has been possible to have an @cam.ac.uk redirection without being included in the central searchable email directory. Only those who have explicitly indicated that they wish their address to be published in the directory will be included.
Since November 1999 new users of the Engineering system have been asked to fill in a form indicating whether they wish to be in the directory. Users who registered with Engineering before that need to register their own preference.
You can check and change your @cam.ac.uk settings by visiting:

This allows you to:
You will need to log in with Raven. See http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/docs/faq/n5.html to find out how to get a Raven password if you do not already have one.
If you are unsure what your university_wide-id (CRSid) is, the aliasid command on the teaching system will tell you. Contact the operators or email postmaster@eng.cam.ac.uk if you have problems with this.
The Computing Service leaflet G91 "Having an entry in the Cambridge email directory" explains more about the service.
