Engineering Department electronic mail system

The Engineering Department runs its own electronic mail system which can be used to communicate with e-mail users throughout the University and beyond to other Internet-connected sites, and via gateways to other networks.

Who has an Engineering Department e-mail account?

Whichever system you have your e-mail account on, you can use the programs provided on the Department's Teaching System to access your e-mail.

Programs for reading mail

A number of mail programs are available on the teaching system.

pine is the recommended mail program. It provides a simple screen-based interface. It is also available on some research systems in the department, and you can download a version for Windows. For those with hermes accounts you should find that running pine on the teaching system will give you access to your hermes mail by default.

A popular alternative for hermes users is the hermes Webmail interface which works from most web browsers anywhere in the world.

It is also possible to access an Engineering e-mail account or Hermes account using mail user agents running on other systems, including personal or College computers.

E-mail Addresses

All e-mail users have an address of the form
        NAME@PLACE

For example, the operators' address is operators@eng.cam.ac.uk. This is the operators' full address which can be used to mail the CUED operators from anywhere on the Internet in the world.

If you wish to tell anyone your e-mail address, it will be: yourloginname@eng.cam.ac.uk. Note that this does not and must not specify a particular machine at CUED.

For most Hermes users their engineering username and hermes username are the same, and you can use whichever you prefer of username@eng.cam.ac.uk or username@hermes.cam.ac.uk. In either case the mail will be delivered to your hermes account. Some more long-standing members of the department may have different usernames on hermes and in engineering: eg spqr here and spqr2 on hermes. Please remember that your valid addresses are spqr@eng.cam.ac.uk, spqr2@eng.cam.ac.uk and spqr2@hermes.cam.ac.uk. If you use spqr@hermes.cam.ac.uk it will not work.

There is an additional form of Cambridge e-mail addresses, ending in @cam.ac.uk. More information is available.

Mail problems

If the online help and pine's internal help do not answer your queries about pine, mail operators@eng.cam.ac.uk. For problems with Hermes you may find it useful to read the Computing Service Handout H2: Electronic Mail in Cambridge or Computing Service Leaflet G94: Getting started with electronic mail at Cambridge.

Mail postmaster@eng.cam.ac.uk if you have other mail difficulties, including problems with mail being rejected by the department.
