Electronic Mail

Historically members of the Department were given personal email accounts on the Engineering Department's own system, but enhancements to the central Computing Service Hermes system mean that it is now the preferred mail system for personal email. All users now have their personal accounts on Hermes. The Computing Service provide a wide range of Documentation, Online Leaflets and FAQs about both Hermes and use of email within Cambridge.

The information provided below gives guidance for those who have role accounts on the Engineering Department Mail Store, and describes other email facilities provided by the Engineering Department Mail Servers.

Finding other people's email addresses

If these techniques fail, or if an address you got through these means or from someone else fails for reasons you don't understand, then postmaster may be able to help. Email postmaster@eng.cam.ac.uk giving as much relevant detail as possible, e.g. the name, status and institution of the person you are trying to contact. If you have an address that is failing please also say where you got the address from, and enclose the fail report you get when you try to use it. Please note that, in order to conform to the 1998 Data Protection Act, we can only give out information about our users if they have explicitly authorised us to do so.
