Running Mailing lists

This help covers running mailing lists which are available to Engineering Department users.

Users can run their own private mailing lists by defining aliases in their mailer. Many users run their own lists this way - they have complete control over who is on the list, and only the user themselves can send to that list. The exact mechanism used depends on which mail user agent (MUA) is being used; in some MUAs the local user alias mechanism is described as an address book.

The Computing Service also provide a user run mailing list service. Further information is given below. We now use this service to provide all of our mailing lists. You should contact postmaster-alias@eng.cam.ac.uk if you wish to set up an engineering-related list using this service.

The CS lists service is also appropriate where the subject of the lists is of University wide interest, including undergraduate societies. In this case consultation is not needed provided the list is not using the eng prefix.

JISCmail is a national mailing list service which is available to the UK academic for use for mailing lists of UK wide academic interest.

Running a Mailing list on lists.cam.ac.uk

If you wish to run such a mailing list on an engineering-related topic please see Applying for a mailing list. You will need to consult with postmaster-alias@eng.cam.ac.uk in order to agree on a suitable name and for postmaster-alias to arrange the list setup with the Computing Service.

Computing Service information on how to run a lists.cam.ac.uk list is available as (CS Leaflet G90). A direct application is appropriate only for lists of University wide interest, including undergraduate societies.
