Setting Up Clients - Details

Note for eduroam users: If you are trying to print to the papercut print server from the eduroam wireless network you will need to replace papercut with the fully qualified domain name of the server papercut.eng.cam.ac.uk when following the instructions below. For example, Windows users will need to use \\papercut.eng.cam.ac.uk\printers instead of \\papercut\printers.

Windows

Before you can install the printers you need to know whether you log onto your machine using a local profile or whether you login using Active Directory.

If you login using Active Directory skip to To install the printer.

If you login using a local account follow these steps:

  1. Go to Control Panel and make sure you can see all of the items by selecting either Small icons or Large icons from the drop down menu on the right side of the window next to View by:

  3. Click Credential Manager which brings up the Windows vault which shows the user what credentials are stored on their machine.
  4.  
  5. Click the Add a Windows credential link to add a new credential to the vault. type the following information into the text boxes.
  6.   For Internet or network address type: papercut Username: ad\(your crsid) Password: Type in your Teaching System password  
  7. Then click OK which will add the information into the vault.

 

To install the printer

To install the printer via the Command Prompt.

  1. Click Start, then ALL Program, then Accessories and then Command Prompt.
  2. Type start \\papercut\printers and then hit "Return".
  3. The printer drivers will then automatically install on your system and the name of your printer will be Printers on papercut click next once the drivers have installed.

 

To install the printer via Control Panel.

  1. Go to Control Panel and click Devices and Printers.
  2.  
  3. Click Add a printer.
  4.  
  5. Click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth Printer.
  6.  
  7. This searches for the available printers but click The printer I want isn't listed.
  8.  
  9. Next to the Select a shared printer by name type \\papercut\printers and then click Next.

  11. The printer drivers will then automatically install on your system and the name of your printer will be Printers on papercut click next once the drivers have installed.

  13. This will state you have successfully added your printer. It is wise to Print a test page to ensure that you have correctly installed the printer. Once you have done this click Finish.

Mac OS

Mac OS X 10.9 and later

Firstly...

Remove any previous papercut installations, if there are any.

Installation

  1. Download a copy of the installation package CUED-papercut-1.0.pkg
  2. In your Downloads folder, double click CUED-papercut-1.0.pkg to run the papercut installer.
  3. Follow the prompts on the installer package, and enter your mac userid and password when prompted.
  4. After running the installer package, open System Preferences (this can be found from the Apple menu at the top left corner of your screen).
  5. Select Printers & Scanners. You will find that two printers have been added, they are called:
    • Papercut Colour
    • Papercut Mono

Set up authenication:

  1. Double click on Papercut Colour to open the print queue.
  2. In the menu bar, at the top of the screen, choose the pull down menu Printer and select Print Test Page .
  3. Your testprint job will appear in the print queue. Click on testprint to select it.
  4. In the menu bar, at the top of the screen, choose the pull down menu Jobs and select Resume Job .
  5. When prompted, enter your userid (CRSid) and your Central Engineering System password (also known as your teaching system password). Be sure to tick Remember this password in my keychain .
  6. Close the Papercut Colour print queue window, and return to the System Settings, Printers & Scanners window.
  7. Repeat the above process for the Papercut Mono printer. This time your CRSid and password should already appear in the dialogue box when you resume the test print job, so you only need to click OK .

Check that your new settings work

Check that your two test page jobs have reached Papercut, but going to any Papercut printer and authenicating yourself with your University card. Select Print Release on the printer, where you should see two test page jobs ready to print. You can print them if you wish, but it is recommended that you delete them, or simply leave them (they will be deleted if you haven't printed them within 24 hours).
