The help system is used about 6 million times a year. It has about
9000 HTML files and 140,000 links. Over half
the links are to documents at other sites, so even if we don't have
the information you need, the help system may point you in the right
direction.
If you want detailed information about a program whose name you
already know (like talk, fvwm or finger for example),
don't use
"help" - use "manprogram_name" (or "xman",
the graphical version of "man") to access online manual pages.
If you want information about the DISPLAY or TERM
environmental variables you should try the Customisation section of the main help page.
Some commands (like set, export, alias, etc) are built into
the 'shell' (the command line interpreter). Do "type command"
to see if this is the case. Further information on these commands is
in the
Shell Scripts document and the bash manual page
There may be online manual pages on the subject. From the unix
command line type "man -kkeyword" to get a list of
manual pages that may be useful to you.
If you're not looking for information on computing (for instance,
if you want syllabus information or information about a person) go to the
CUED Local Web Page
If neither the
main
CUED help page
nor the above options help you get the information, then see the
list of
staff contacts.
