Some common graphics viewers

There are 100s of graphics file formats around. See our Some Common Graphics File Formats page for a list of just a few.

The easiest way to view a file's contents is to click on its icon. This should launch an appropriate program to view that type of file, but there may be alternative programs. Here's a list of some viewers that we have

  • evince - displays postscript and PDF files
  • kghostview - displays postscript and PDF files
  • kpdf - displays postscript and PDF files
  • xpdf - displays postscript and PDF files
  • gs - displays postscript and PDF files
  • acroread - displays PDF files
  • xfig - displays FIG files
  • xdvi - displays DVI files produced by LaTeX
  • gwenview - displays folders of image files (useful when browsing)
  • Gimp - loads, saves and manipulates most image formats
  • Matlab - loads its own files. Has limited support for jpeg, etc.
