Creating your first World Wide Web page
What you need
- A networked PC or Macintosh
- Netscape Gold with the Publish facility correctly configured
All secretarial PC users' machines should already have the appropriate
software and configuration.
How to create a page
It only takes a minute or two to create an online document that all
the world can see. Let's create a World Wide Web page with the
location
http://www2.eng.cam.ac.uk/~uid/test.html
(where uid is your user ID on the main computer system). What
you do next depends on the set-up you have
- PC Users and Mac users running the 'Dave' software
- Connect to your unix filespace in the usual way using
- File manager from Windows for Wgroups
- Explorer from Windows 95
- Dave from a Mac
Connect to \\smb-serv\uid. The new network drive will appear
in Explorer/File Manager, or on your Mac's desktop.
- Start Netscape Gold
- Select the New Document ... option from the File menu
(start with a blank document).
- Type a few lines. Making text bold or
coloured is
as easy as it is in Word.
- Save the document to E:\public_html\test.html
- Mac Users
- Start Netscape Gold
- Select the New Document ... option from the File menu
(start with a blank document).
- Type a few lines. Making text bold or
coloured is
as easy as it is in Word.
- Save the document onto your local machine
- Select Publish and accept the default settings, calling
the file test.html.
That's it! To see whether you've succeeded, look at
http://www2.eng.cam.ac.uk/~uid/test.html
using your browser.
