xman lets you read manual pages. netscape and textttxrn provides access to the outside world.

You can run LATEX from the command line, but you might like to try xlatex. A tip worth knowing about is that you don't have to restart xdvi if you update the DVI file - xdvi will read the new file next time it displays a page.
