Official profile pages

An official profile page (an individual's "homepage") is generated automatically when a member of staff arrives in the Department. The URL for one of these pages is of the form

http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/~userid

where 'userid' is the person's user id on the CUED system.

The information comes from the EDDA database. If it's wrong, contact edda-updates

Updating your profile page

The automatically generated page is intended as a skeleton, which you can fill out with more detailed information such as research interests, and links to other pages that you may create yourself. You can update this automatically generated profile page in various ways:

  • From the Teaching System
    • Editing your profile. If remotely log into the Teaching System you can edit the page directly using the emacs text editor. Type the command edit_homepage to start up emacs and load your profile page into it. You will see comments embedded in the file, suggesting where you might want to add material.
    • Replacing your profile. If you have already written a page that you want to use, you can copy it over the automatically generated profile page. Log on to the Teaching System as above, and type the command replace_homepage filename, replacing 'filename' with the name of the file that you want to use as your profile page. If the page that you want to use is already your home page on www2.eng.cam.ac.uk, you can just use the replace_homepage command on its own. (Note: This command copies only the HTML file. It does not copy any linked images or other pages.)
  • From a Windows PC
You can connect to the server as a 'network drive' from a Windows PC within the Department, and edit your profile page directly from your PC. You should connect to:
    \\update-www.eng.cam.ac.uk\userid
replacing userid with your own userid. Once you have connected to the network drive, you can edit your profile just as you would any other file on your computer. If you have difficulty in connecting to the server, please contact pc-support@eng.cam.ac.uk
  • From a Macintosh running OS X
From the 'Go' menu, choose 'Connect to server', and enter the following into the Address box:
    smb://update-www.eng.cam.ac.uk/userid
(From the 'Go' menu, choose 'Connect to server', and enter the above into the Address box.) replacing userid with your own userid. Once you have connected to the network drive, you can edit your profile just as you would any other file on your computer. If you have difficulty in connecting to the server, you can try the following alternate form of the address:
    smb://updatewww/userid
If you are still unable to connect, please contact help@eng.cam.ac.uk

If your research group runs its own (reliable) web server, you can also have the standard URL http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/~userid point to a page on that server. Ask webadmin@eng.cam.ac.uk to set up the redirection. (Note: redirections to home pages on www2.eng.cam.ac.uk are not available. If you have a page on www2.eng.cam.ac.uk that you want to use as your official profile page, you can use the methods described above to move it to www.eng.cam.ac.uk.)

House style for profile pages

If you edit the automatically generated page, or create a page of your own, it should conform to the Department's house style for staff profile pages. Please also read the Worldwide Web Departmental Guidelines.
