Computers have been used at CUED in teaching for at least 20 years. Since
1984 we have produced
computer-based teaching
material in-house. The
Department's involvement in the innovative
Interact Project
has led to the production of some
highly successful interactive computing packages. For the most part
we have concentrated on simulations of engineering systems.
The programs we use are
- Bought - e.g. Metacard.
- Produced by teaching staff - e.g. planes.
- Produced by computer officers - e.g.
SoftSpec. We also provide numerous front-ends and utilities
to make existing packages easier to use, and adapt free source code.
- Produced as the result of student projects - e.g. qsim.
- Produced by research projects - the Interact project (TLTP funded) was based
here). One example is
Airfoil.
In addition the Language Unit make use of software maintained by us to
evaluate the foreign language skills of students.
