Fourth Year Engineering

3D Ultrasound Imaging

Several MEng projects each year contribute to a leading system for the acquisition and visualisation of three-dimensional medical ultrasound images that has been developed by the Department in collaboration with Addenbrooke's Hospital. The system is called Stradx and incorporates uniquely accurate tools for visualising structures inside the body and measuring their volumes. In 1999, one of our students, Christian Floerkemeier, won the national IMechE Annual Biomedical Engineering Project Prize for his work on a new, interactive visualisation tool.

3D Ultrasound Images

The picture shows various images of a foetus inside its mother's body. The top right-hand image shows a conventional two-dimensional ultrasound scan, while the other images are derived from the Stradx system to show the overall shape of the foetus and its internal skeleton.
